Breaking the blog today from my everyday style posts to share a special program in my local community. I have to admit, when I started this blog I’ve always wanted to share more than just my personal style. So when I was contacted to learn about and bring awareness to such an amazing program I was all on board!
Health Pathway is one of two new programs that help local high school students in the Oakland Unified School District. This program helps students break into various fields in the medical world.
I had the pleasure of interviewing a student by the name of Hui Qiao who is approaching her senior year at Oakland High School. Here’s what she had to say about the program..
1. Tell me about yourself.
“My name is Hui Qiao Wu and I’m approaching my last year 0f high school. I came to the U.S from China when I was 7 years old.”
2. Top ways you benefited from the program.
“Aside from learning in a classroom, I’ve gotten a chance to work at Highland Hospital. Which gave me a more hands on experience.”
3. Obstacles in the programs and how did you benefit from it.
“During the program all communication is done by the students. So I’ve learned how to interact and speak with the medical professionals directly. I’ve also had an opportunity to work in the operation room. That environment can be very intense and strict which can make you nervous so you have to be your best self.”
4. What are your career plans?
“After I graduate high school, I’m pursuing a degree to obtain my nursing license.”
5. What opportunities has Health Path opened for you?
“I’ve gotten a chance to work in the new stimulation lab, where I met the medical directors and coordinators. This led to the opportunity of working in the lab over the summer.”
6. Why would you recommend the Health Path Program to another student?
“Because this program is so hands on you benifit from working directly with the patients and medical professionals.”
7. How has the program impacted the way you see yourself and your potential?
“This program has impacted my personality overall. Since starting this program in the 8th grade it has made an impact on my personal and professional life.”
8.What would the country look like if all students participated in The Health Path program?
“Every high school student will have the opportunity to become more mature while experiencing real-life moments. Most students are only in the a school environment, which can be less demanding and more lenient. Even if you’re not interested in the medical field, students can gain more knowledge about the importance of hygiene and basic Health.”
“Even though I applied to this internship myself, my family has fully supported me and I feel like I support them with everything.”
